What’s the matter with being lonely?

Actually, being lonely serves a very important social purpose. It makes us pine for human company, and that makes for social cohesion. So while the study referenced above shows that on an individual level, the person with an AI friend feels better, as better as if they had the “real thing”, but it speaks nothing of the social sphere, and what happens to social cohesion.

In fact, if we continue to mollify man’s loneliness (using “man” here for alliterative purposes only), or whatever ails any of us with this kind of band-aid approach that doesn’t address the root cause, we just make things worse. The “modern condition”, whether that is technology based emotional dislocation, the tearing apart of community fabric represented by mobility and the need for flexible labour, is fundamentally a dehumanisation process.

The more modern we become, the less human. Being human is about being rooted to the earth, being rooted to place, to community, to sharing spiritual, sexual, and emotional bonds with those around you–friends, family, members of your tribe. This is how we evolved. What we are experiencing now is not an evolution, but we are simply becoming. de-racinated, torn from the ground, root ball and all.

Into that breach I throw myself. Wouldn’t it be fun and a lot more convenient if an AI tool could just take over my life and run me? I would be so much more effective. And for a submissive, a slave, a baby, it all just seems so tempting for AI to become my mommy, my dominatrix, my coach, my boss, really just a proxy of my adult self.
