The miracle of honey and the power of combining honey with another antibacterial, cinnamon

You’ve gotta try it.

I sure do love honey.  As a beekeeper, there is bias involved, but let me tell you, honey really is a panacea.  Just get lost in google if you need more than my say-so.  The internet is overflowing with gushing praise for the miracle that is honey.

Doing this googling myself, I stumbled across the honey-cinnamon combo, and of course, if you are a pill-popper on the vitamin spectrum, you will already know about what cinnamon does.

Well, what do they do?

There is no dispute that both honey and cinnamon are both antibacterial and antiseptic.  You will find them applied to such ailments as skin problems like pimples/acne, eczema, but also bladder infections or toothaches.  On the wilder end of the spectrum, honey and cinnamon have also been connected to properties which may suppress some forms of cancer.

I am not advocating that these two are an infallible cure…but you would be wise to include these as part of a health hedging strategy.  After all, why not.  I consume both daily…cinnamon in my coffee [check out my daily brew here, it will redefine what good coffee tastes like] and honey with yoghurt, or just on its own on a spoon.

Since the Middle Ages, in both Eastern and Western medicine, cinnamon has been used to treat a wide range of ailments: arthritis, asthma, cancer, diarrhea, fever, heart palpitations, sleeplessness, menstrual cramps, ulcers, psoriasis, and muscles which won’t stop clenching and cramping.  While use is not the same as efficacity, cinnamon has been lab-confirmed as a muscle sedative, an antibiotic, but also working on ulcers, acting as a digestive aid, circulation, etc.

Cinnamon has also been proven to lower bad cholesterol levels when taken daily, and ditto, to help reduce blood-sugar levels in diabetics.  Pretty darn good!

Honey is also a standout. Just how much we love honey is underlined by how every major culture in history has cultivated it, and has used it for both its nutritional, cosmetic, and medicinal properties.  Some cultures went so far as to name Gods after the bee.  It would have to be that good if people were willing to endure the pain of bee stings before the arrival of the net bee suit.

What does honey have?  Well, first off, it is alive.  It is teaming with beneficial bacteria.  These are of course affected by the processing of the honey…and as with many things, the less processing the better…raw, unfiltered is best.  Honey is loaded with vitamin B2 and B6.

Another bee product, propolis, a mix of tree sap mixed with bee spittle is a strong antibacterial, antifungal.  Propolis is a proven anticancer fighter, particularly with colon cancer.  Honey is also a potent antioxidant.

My favourite is honey as a wound healer.  Get a small topical burn?  Put some honey on it and cover it with a bandage, and you will see the difference in a day.  Ditto for cuts and blisters.  I have had suppurating blisters that were so bad they were bleeding—what happens when you put a pick in the delicate, soft hands of a girlieboy!  Day one, bleeding hands.  Day two, completely healed.  No joke.

There is a wonderful website thread that extolls the virtues of cinnamon and honey, and indeed, they are all over the internet.  This is a simplified version for easier reading.  If you want to cure X, then Y:

  • Heart disease: make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder and eat it once a day for breakfast.  This paste is thought to increase the plasticity of the veins;
  • Bladder infections: dilute a paste of honey and cinnamon in warm water and drink;
  • Toothache: apply a paste of honey and cinnamon to the affected tooth;
  • Cholesterol: mix a paste into a cup of tea and drink;
  • Common Cold: dilute a paste in warm water and take 3 times daily;
  • Upset stomach: a spoon of honey and cinnamon paste will help with this;
  • Gas: a paste of the two taken daily will rid you of gas;
  • Immunity: a paste of the two will stimulate the immune system

Etc, etc.  The site goes on to link the pair to fighting cancer, getting rid of bad breath, curing fatigue, helping you lose weight, managing skin infections.  Pretty amazing.

With all those benefits, you’d be nuts not to add it to your daily repertoire.  I do.
