Not just one of my children likes to cook, another does too. When he does cook, it is for dishes which require precision. More of a baker, a rather precise art, it suits their character. They are demonstrating executive leanings. They recently led a kitchen brigade. Proud papa.
It is even more of a delight to behold the seeds of charitable giving taking hold. A group of my child’s friends decided to put on a charity dinner in support of homelessness in the area where they live. This involved everything. There was the kitchen part, sure—menu planning, sourcing, etc. But there was also donations, gifts, discounted sourcing, venue, and pulling off an evening for over 100 people. Not bad for a group of teenagers.
They raised well over £10,000. My child had designed the menu and then played the part of executive chef, plating and expediting through the evening. Another child had done the hard graft of boning and filleting wild-caught duck and removing buck shot.
It is wonderful that they have both found passion in the culinary arts…a source of great life pleasure and therapy. But this is nothing compared to how I felt in seeing them orchestrate and lead an evening for charity. It makes me cry even now to think about how fortunate I am to have children that already think this way…that those who have can give, should give, should help.
I rocked boy mode that night. Some of their mates even told them that I was “drip”—apparently the term for a natty dresser. Not one item in my “boy mode” was made for men…it was all stealth lady duds. I was happy about that.
My wife, equally proud, sat at the other end of the room. We did not acknowledge each other.
When I bid at the auction on two of the lesser items (had to bid even if I’m broke) I bid to win. And I could see delight in their smiles as I won—paying way over the odds for two delightful picnic baskets from you know which retailer in London. Why two? One for me, and one for you.
Wow that’s wonderful! I can imagine you being very proud. I think I would be as well. 😊 Well done on your kids! And on you for teaching them to be so caring.
Hi…thanks. I am not sure that I taught them, or how you teach such things. Maybe they watch. But more than anything they might achieve in academics or sports or other fields, this resonates most of all.

i think children SHOW a lot more AWARENESS /UNDERSTANDING than Adults do ..OUR CHILDREN 3 BOYS AND ONE GIRL are VERY ..THINKABLE ..Than most are .MARK.X
they sure do…starting with their sense of wonder and innocence. When you look at the world with wonder in your eyes and in your heart, that is what you get back. An enlightened adult protects this sense in children for as long as possible, before society and life events take it away…but it is a vital store of strength that helps us grow into effective adults. I’d love to see her lot’s too. It is good. We have a fairly regular schedule. It helps for planning, but also allows me to think about being with her.

Hi Mark…I am sorry to hear that you are in pain. That makes you doubly strong to be here, and I thank you for it. To answer your question, no, nobody has ever made me feel bad about buying knickers. When I used to be shy about it, they might have thought something but they kept it to themselves. Now I just walk up to one of the saleswomen and ask for her help. And the experience is much better as a result. They take great trouble to make me feel comfortable, have helped me with putting them on, finding sizes, choosing patterns, giving advice, and just being understanding. It has been great.

Hi Mark…thank you for asking. They have been very supportive. My family has been supportive. My siblings have. Interestingly, the males in my family have felt more supportive than the females…though I hasten to note that they are all supportive, I just think that the women have had a harder time adjusting. This has surprised me a little as in my non-family life, the women have been more accepting and encouraging.
